November 1, 2012 – Cohen Commission Report Confirms Need to Protect Fish Habitat & Fund Science
OTTAWA – The Cohen Commission Report identified 75 recommendations to improve the future sustainability of the Fraser River sockeye salmon fisheries. These recommendations, however, are not only applicable to sockeye salmon on the West Coast but have national implications for how the Government and DFO manage all our fishery resources.

OTTAWA – Following today’s release of the Cohen Commission report on the decline of the Fraser River sockeye salmon, the NDP is calling on the Conservative government to immediately implement the Commission’s recommendations.

OTTAWA–New Democrats welcome the government’s decision to preserve the current owner operator policies for the East Coast. After months of sidestepping questions by the Official Opposition NDP about whether Conservatives support this policy, Minister of Fisheries & Oceans Keith Ashfield confirmed today that fleet separation and owner operator rules for Atlantic Canada will remain intact.

DARTMOUTH– The latest round of job cuts handed to DFO’s Nova Scotia Habitat Management Branch puts the sustainability of the Atlantic Fisheries at risk. The cuts are a direct result of changes to the Fisheries Act introduced in the Conservative’s Trojan horse budget bill and the removal of the protection of fish habitat.
